Fibers Index

More than 90 billion pounds of natural and man-made fiber are consumed in the world annually. Man made fibers come in a wide range of forms, most of which are in the filament or staple product types. Terms that often are applied to these fiber products are:

Producer colored, high tenacity, partially oriented (POY), normal tenacity, fully drawn (FDY, FOY or SDW), hollow, air jet textured, optical, false twist textured, warp drawn

Many of the above terms apply to filament yarns. Staple fibers may be formed into yarns or fabrics via a number of processes, including:

Ring spinning, knitting, open end spinning, Murata jet spinning, nonwovens - dry laid, nonwovens - wet laid, weaving, tufted
