EPDM

The EPDM business is on the threshold of the adoption of new technologies including metallocene catalyst systems and gas phase polymerization. Also, the formation of the DOW-DuPont elastomers venture appears on the verge of revitalizing the DuPont EPDM business.

A key issue in assessing the impact of metallocene technology on the EPDM business is the suitability of metallocene products as replacements for Zeigler-Natta products. Metallocene catalysts produce narrow molecular weight distribution products which have excellent physical properties. Also, catalyst cost is low. However, processability is inferior in many important applications and may preclude their usage. Multiple reactors are an approach to broaden MWD, but costs will be higher. We believe that the transition will be slower than many think.
