MEMORY
SUPPRESSION
(10/15/77)
Well . . . . the dilemma of the memory problem continues. It seems that knowledge and wisdom are germane, to say the least! I have come across with something that at first has startled me . . . . . . but on second thought it is not so shocking after all. Let me try to explain . . . . . . . . On this earth, within this physical world and existence, we as human beings experience great loss on occasion. It can be devastating . . . . a terrible loss . . . . . emptiness. I am referring to, say, a death in the family. Even more serious would be the death of one who is very close . . . . . .a mate . . . . . the love of one's life. The tragedy is all consuming. But for many, or for, let's say, the majority, the pain lasts for a finite length of time. And, after a certain period of time, some stability is achieved . . . . . . some equilibrium . . . . . some peace . . . . . some rest . . . . . . some sanity . . . . . some quiescent state that is far more acceptable than when the holocaust was first realized. We have heard that "time heals all things". Well . . . . . .what is going on? Where are our principles, our beliefs, our morals and our standards"? Why should anything be different just because of the passage of a little time? There are some possible answers. Is it memory decay . . . . . . .. like radio activity decay . . . . . . .or I should say isotope decay. Is it resignation of the spirit? Do we have the ability to selectively erase memory that is painful? Or maybe it is our nature to eliminate painful memories. Is it done for us? That is involuntarily, or do we just de-emphasize the repulsive recollection? Or do we divert attention to a more pleasant memory while still retaining the distasteful? Do we cover the unwanted memory with a layer of "sugar" . . . . do we dupe ourselves in order to survive? Or do we simply cope with the "unacceptable" knowledge of the loss of a totally needed love? Well . . . . . I just don't know which is the right answer . . . . .. or even if there is a correct response to the question. But it is true that people "bounce back" from these kinds of losses and I think the reason is, for all practical reasons, and "effective" loss of memory. Quite possibly the driving force to survive . . . . .. that of the physical body and that of the human spirit . . . . . . is actually stronger than the driving force of love. Now that's a rather provocative statement. The subject of driving forces merits more discussion . . . . . but not now. So after a great loss, people say "Oh what the hell, let's survive and perpetuate"!!!!! |
