 THE DEFINITION OF INTELLIGENCE (9/27/77)

·        Intelligence – The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge

·        Capacity – The ability to receive, hold or absorb, the ability to do something, faculty, aptitude

·        Acquire – To gain possession of

·        Possession – The act or fact of possessing

·        To Possess – To have as property; to own

·        Knowledge – That which is known; the sum or range of what has been perceived, discovered, or inferred; information

·        Property – A possession, ownership

·        Apply – To use with reference to a particular . . . . thing

·        To Have – To be in possession of, to hold in one's mind, to entertain

·        To Hole – To keep in one's possession

·        To Keep – To retain possession, to store

The ability to gain possession of, and use, with reference to a particular thing that which has been perceived.

To Store – To reserve of put away for future use.

Future (adj.) -  . . . that is to be or come in the future

Future (n) – The indefinite period of time yet to be; time that is to come.

The ability to receive that which has been perceived information

The ability to perceive – To become aware . . . directly through any of the senses

The ability to receive information, directly through any of the senses . . . or, the ability to perceive information

The ability to store knowledge for an indefinite period of time

The ability to apply stored knowledge

The ability to:

1.      Perceive information

2.      Retain possession of knowledge for a period of time

3.      Apply stored knowledge

The ability to perceive, retain possession of, and apply knowledge.

The ability to perceive, keep and apply knowledge.

So: The dictionary says,

Intelligence is . . . . . . "The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge"

I say Intelligence is . . . . .THE ABILITY TO PERCEIVE, KEEP AND APPLY KNOWLEDGE

This is equivalent through related definitions.  Actually, the first definition encompasses the concepts of transmission, retention and application of knowledge.  However, my definition shows the "building blocks" of intelligence more precisely:

Ability – The degree of proficiency

Perceive – The reception of information through any of the senses

Keep – The storage of information by the brain . . . . . . memory!!!  It is clear that there is an indefinite time period associated with this part of intelligence.

Apply – The rational use of stored knowledge with reference to a particular thing or person

Knowledge – That which has been perceived.

Definition of Memory – "The mental faculty of retaining and recalling past experience"

So, to be even more precise from a mechanistic point of view, we must consider the processes of information "injection" and "reclamation" from storage.

Therefore . . . . Intelligence is . . . .

THE ABILITY TO PERCEIVE, STORE, KEEP, RECALL AND APPLY KNOWLEDGE

Perceive

-

Sensitivity

Store

-

Discipline to Memorize

Keep

-

Retention Capacity . . . . . Time

Recall

-

Recall

Apply

-

Use of Knowledge

I think we forgot one . . . . . . . apply implies the reasonable application of knowledge.  Therefore our definition must include a term . . . . . say, evaluate!

So . . . . . . .Intelligence is:

THE ABILITY TO PERCEIVE, STORE, KEEP, RECALL EVALUATE AND APPLY KNOWLEDGE
