PLEASANT HILL — The Acalanes High School Blueprint has been named best high school newspaper in the nation by the American Scholastic Press Association.

The Blueprint, which was rated against 59 other newspapers nationwide, also received the "Most Outstanding High School Newspaper" honor in 1999. The paper was evaluated on content, design, editing and creativity, among other categories. The Blueprint also earned a special merit rating for earning a 955 score out of a possible 1,000.

Earlier this month, Blueprint writer Tara Yarlagadda received top honors for feature writing from the Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists.

"It's one thing to think you're a top performing high school newspaper, but it's another thing to get a validation of that from outside sources," Blueprint adviser Larry Freeman said in a news release. "Compliments are a lot more rare in this business than kicks in the teeth, so this one feels especially good."

The Handbook yielded some very interesting information.   It's the Acalanes High School History . . . plus the Background of all of the Faculty !!

When Harry Noller and I (Fred Arbogast)  took organic chemistry together at Cal, we found that Pete Chiesa was going to Berkeley also.  Anyway, Harry got a hold of some payote buttons and the three of us decided to see if we could purify the mescalin at Pete's chem lab in Lafayette.

Well . . .  we "screwed up" the extraction process and never produced that psycadelic drug!  We were pretty dissapointed, but I guess it was fortunate, since  we didn't turn out to be drug dealers!!  Wheeouuu!!!  hahahaha

Here's More Blueprint Clippings ("Carter Specials")

Here's a Special (and only) Edition of "The Acalanes Daily Blast" . . . Found this June 2018 in a garage box.  It must have been the Spring of 1956 when Dolores Roeschen ran for, and won Election as the Acalanes Social Secretary for the Class of 1957.  Phil Shoptaugh's Dad owned the Piedmont Press in Oakland, so Phil set the type on the Intertype Machine, and he and I (Fred Arbogast) were the "ghost writers" for "Dan Stelapane" and "Hubert Kane" !   We put up several copies in the open hallways.   Also we made big letters with cardboard and placed a giant "DOLORES" up on the hill behind the football field. The news print is so old it has turned brown, but the text is readable.
