The Acalanes Jazz Band of the 50s |
Here's a "vintage" photograph given to me by John Gillivan at the 55th Year Class of 1956 Reunion on 9/24/2011. Actually John's brother, Jerry, '58, passed it to him to give to me for the website. I thought the band was playing for the Orinda Crossroads Freeway celebration, but talking with Harry and Bob, we had a Dixieland band for that. So we're still trying to figure out what the occasion is for this picture. Anyway, the characters in the picture are: Playing alto sax are Chuck Colburn. '57, and Harry Noller. Bob Long and Stan Pitkin, '55, are on the tenor saxes. the tall trumpet player is Andy Johnson (not in Acalanes), but Mario ("Butch") Guarneri, the short kid not even in high school yet, is also on trumpet, and me, Fred Arbogast, is on the trombone. The singer is Diane Rush (not found yet), and across the back we have Bob Johnson on piano, Jerry Gillivan, '58, on guitar, Ed Rinne, '57,on string bass, and Dick Pape, '55, on drums and percussion. What a good group!! To view a contemporary band, take a look at the original Orindians, all of which are band members on this page. |
